"Do you know when you'll be speaking to Haim?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There's just one problem: The sender also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple famous supporters have publicly begged for the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy nominees.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a close gang. Their videos repeatedly depict them striding in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered exuberance you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire people to form a group."

"Therefore everyone is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Award Nod

The group are speaking from a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The lyrics detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed resilience demanded a new sound – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

However the sister act will forever be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
