The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.
"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
